The term “FFP2” is a critical classification within the European EN149 standard for filtering half masks. An FFP2 Disposable Respiratory Mask is designed to provide protection against particles of fine and coarse aerosols, dust, and smoke, making it highly suitable for the dental setting where bioaerosols are prevalent.
FFP stands for “Filtering Face Piece.” The number indicates the level of protection:
- FFP1 filters at least 80% of particles.
- FFP2 filters at least 94% of particles. (Equivalent to KN95 and N95).
- FFP3 filters at least 99% of particles.

Therefore, an FFP2 mask is the standard recommended protection level for healthcare workers, including dental professionals, against infectious aerosols. It is tested for its ability to filter both solid and liquid particles. Key features of a quality FFP2 mask include a multilayer filter media, a nose clip for a tight facial seal to prevent leakage, and low breathing resistance to ensure wearer comfort during long procedures.
It is important to distinguish a respirator mask (like an FFP2) from a surgical mask. Surgical masks are designed primarily to protect the patient and the environment from the wearer’s respiratory emissions. Respirator masks are designed to protect the wearer from inhaling hazardous particles from the environment. In dentistry, where the risk of inhalation of infectious agents is high, an FFP2 respirator provides a much higher level of protection for the clinician than a standard surgical mask.
