For general dental procedures with lower aerosol generation or for patient use, the 3-Ply Type IIR Surgical Mask is the workhorse of dental infection control. Available for OEM wholesale, these masks offer a balance of protection, comfort, and cost-effectiveness for high-volume daily use.
The “3-Ply” construction consists of three layers:
- Outer layer (blue or green): A fluid-repellent non-woven layer that blocks splashes, droplets, and body fluids.
- Middle layer: A melt-blown filter layer that is the primary barrier for bacteria and particles.
- Inner layer: A soft, absorbent non-woven layer that is comfortable against the skin and absorbs moisture from exhaled breath.

The “Type IIR” designation is a European standard (EN 14683) indicating a high level of performance. The “II” refers to a bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) of ≥98%. The “R” signifies resistance to splashes (synthetic blood), making them ideal for procedures where there is a risk of fluid spray.
These masks are typically pleated (folded) to expand and cover the nose, mouth, and chin comfortably. They feature a malleable nose wire for a secure fit and reduce glasses fogging, and elastic ear loops for secure placement. Being disposable, they ensure hygiene and are a fundamental, non-negotiable consumable for protecting both the patient and the dental team during every clinical interaction.
